  1. In animals, a method of reproduction in which
  2. the embryo develops inside the body of the
  3. female from which it gains nourishment (in
  4. contrast to ovipary and ovovivipary).
  5. Vivipary is best developed in placental
  6. mammals, but also occurs in some arthropods,
  7. fishes, amphibians, and reptiles that have
  8. placentalike structures. In plants, it is the
  9. formation of young plantlets or bulbils
  10. instead of flowers. The term also describes
  11. seeds that germinate prematurely, before
  12. falling from the parent plant. Premature
  13. germination is common in mangrove trees,
  14. where the seedlings develop sizable spearlike
  15. roots before dropping into the swamp below;
  16. this prevents their being washed away by the
  17. tide.
